xG Technology Demonstrates Opportunities to Improve Public Safety CommunicationsxG Technology Inc., a developer of smart radio technology designed to improve utilization of the nation’s airwaves, presented developments for improving public safety communications using advances in cognitive radio at the International Wireless Communications Expo and Conference.
The company is currently operating a cognitive radio network in Ft. Lauderdale, which stands to address some of the public safety community’s most pressing issues. This network frees up spectrum, combines voice and data on single Internet Protocol network, is fully mobile and uses unlicensed spectrum to save money on operating cost. xG Technology’s (News - Alert) director of business development, Chris Whiteley, presented concepts for improving public safety communications at a panel titled: “Next Generation Broadband Wireless Architecture.” During the panel, Whiteley highlighted the importance of unlicensed spectrum and noted it would play a key role in stimulating innovation. The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission recently stressed the need for making available additional bands of spectrum. xG also made presentations to the FCC (News - Alert) and the House of Representatives staff last month. During these sessions, the company focused on technical advancements designed to improve the utilization of unlicensed spectrum. The company’s mobile VoIP and broadband technology, xMax, represents an example of such innovation. xMax, which recently received an Internet Telephony Magazine 2009 Product of the Year Award, is a product of xG Technology’s extensive R&D activity.
The $100 million xMax project ensures its networks can be deployed at significantly lower costs than existing wireless technologies. This opens the door to new competition, enhanced service options and lower costs for public safety agencies.
To further advance public knowledge of its efforts on the wireless spectrum, xG Technology also recently released a white paper titled, “Stacking xMax Against WiMAX IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16e,” which aims that xMax is able to provide operators with a higher level of profitability than WiMAX. In addition to this, xG Technology also recently announced its complete and total support of the remarks made by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski (News - Alert) in reference to the importance of unlicensed spectrum. Genachowski spoke recently at the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C. and noted that more spectrum would be needed to accommodate the exploding mobile data demand. xG continues to demonstrate the value it can bring to the wireless spectrum, as well as the opportunities that exist in this space. The company’s xMax network is just one example of the potential this market can present. As the FCC continues to focus efforts on the movement to use wireless spectrum, xG will continue to play a vital role in the direction. Susan J.
